About NetCheck
NetCheck answers one question every South African has asked at some point: is it my internet, or is it them?
We built NetCheck as a free, independent toolkit for anyone whose internet is acting up — at home, at work or on the go. Instead of just showing numbers, our tools explain what the numbers mean and what to do next, in plain English.
What we offer
- Internet speed test — download, upload, ping, jitter and lag under load, measured against local servers, with a data saver mode for mobile users.
- Connection diagnosis — finds the most likely cause of slow or unstable internet and gives you a prioritised fix list and a report for your provider.
- What’s my IP? — your public IP address, provider and approximate location.
- Is it down? — checks if any website is down for everyone, or just for you.
- Guides — practical help on Wi-Fi, choosing a package, power backup and more.
Our principles
- Free and no sign-up. The site is supported by advertising, which we keep away from the tools themselves.
- Independent. We don’t sell internet packages and we’re not owned by an internet provider.
- Private. Speed-test history is stored only on your own device. See our privacy policy.
- Honest. Results are estimates. We explain how each tool works so you can judge the results yourself.
How the speed test works
Our speed test uses Cloudflare’s open-source speed-test engine and global network, which has servers in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. If those servers can’t be reached, NetCheck automatically falls back to its own backup test servers.
