Is it down? Check if a website is down right now

Type any web address to see if it’s down for everyone — or just for you.

How our website down checker works

  1. DNS lookup. We check that the domain name exists and points to a server.
  2. Server check. Our servers on Cloudflare’s network (usually Johannesburg or Cape Town for South African visitors) request the page and follow any redirects, timing the response.
  3. Your connection. Your browser then tries to reach the site directly, so we can tell you if it’s down for everyone or just you.

Browser error messages and what they mean

ErrorWhat it usually means
DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN / ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVEDThe domain can’t be found. Check the spelling, or your DNS settings if every site fails.
ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUTThe server didn’t answer in time — it may be down, or your connection is dropping.
ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSEDThe server actively refused the connection — often down or blocked.
ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTEDYour device isn’t connected to the internet. Check Wi-Fi or mobile data.
ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR / NET::ERR_CERT_…Security certificate problem. Check your device’s date and time; otherwise it’s the website.
ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTSThe site is stuck in a redirect loop. Clear cookies for that site.

It’s up, but not for me — what now?

  • Refresh properly: Ctrl + F5 on a computer, or close and reopen the tab on a phone.
  • Try a private/incognito window to rule out cookies and extensions.
  • Switch networks: try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi (or the other way round).
  • Flush your DNS cache: on Windows, open Command Prompt and run ipconfig /flushdns. On a Mac, run sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder in Terminal. On phones, switch flight mode on and off.
  • Try a different DNS: setting your device or router to 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 (Google) can fix sites that won’t load on your provider’s DNS.
  • Restart your router if several sites are failing — or run our connection diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a website is down for everyone or just me?

Enter the address above. We check the site from our servers, then check it from your own device. If it’s up for us but not for you, the problem is on your side — your connection, DNS, browser or network. If it’s down for us too, the website itself has a problem.

Can I check apps like WhatsApp, banking apps or Netflix?

Yes — enter the service’s website address (for example web.whatsapp.com or netflix.com). Apps use the same servers in most cases, so if the website is down, the app is often affected too. Some outages only affect logins or payments, so a site can be “up” while one feature fails.

Why does a site show as “up” when it isn’t working for me?

Our check confirms the server responds. If it’s up but not working for you, try a private browser window, clear the site’s cookies, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or restart your router. If only one page or feature is broken, the problem may be on the website’s side even though the server responds.

What does “blocked our automated check” mean?

Some websites use bot protection that blocks automated tools like ours (usually with an HTTP 403 or 429 response). A response like that proves the server is online, so we mark it as up — real visitors can usually open the site normally.

What is the recently checked list?

It shows the last ten websites people checked, so you can quickly see if a popular service is having problems. Only the domain name and result are shown — never who checked it. Some addresses are automatically kept off the list.

How long does a check take?

Usually one to three seconds. If a site is very slow or not responding, we wait up to ten seconds before reporting it as down.
